7 THINGS
THAT WILL HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE A SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY IN SCHOOL
You knew
it would come, but you kept pushing it to the back of your mind. Now the day is
around the corner; your pretty little baby’s first day at school. Many of us as
parents have gone through such times, and many needlessly get anxious and
stressed out as your child’s first day at school draws close. But it doesn’t’
have to be like that. Here are 7 things that will help your child to have a
successful first day of school.
One of the
steps that will help you lessen anxiety in your life is to meet his school
teacher before the opening of the school year. Take your child along for the
meet, for this will enable your child to meet his teacher; this meeting will
help your child identify and connect with the teacher when he begins school.
This will also make it easier for you to part with your child on that first day
in school.
Taking
your child to explore the grounds of the school will also help a lot. Show him
his classroom, the offices of the members of staff and even the bathroom. This will make him familiar with the surroundings,
and not make him feel out of place when he starts school.
Reducing
your child’s anxiety level is paramount; you may begin to do this by taking him
along to buy his school supplies. Let him be the one to pick out his back pack,
lunch box and even pencil case. Once you get back home, start teaching him how
to organize his school stuff. For example, show him how to arrange his crayons
and pencils in the right compartment, how to arrange his back pack and lunch
box, etc. You can also purchase books
that have to do with preparing children for their first day at school at school.
Make sure you spend time working with him and going through the books. This will
help him by showing him what to do and how to face studies in school.
On the
D-Day, pray with your child. This would accomplish two things; it may help to
ease your child’s anxiety and also eradicate any fears you might have. You can
also give him something small, like a toy he likes or a picture that will
remind him of home after school hours. Reassure him of your love and always
tell him he is very special.
If you
can, be the one to take your child to school. This would further put the child
at ease and will give you the opportunity to meet the school admin. At school,
stay around for a short while. Promise him you will come for him at the end of
the day.
Then make
a clean break. Do not allow the child’s fussiness get to you. Make sure you
check back at the end of the school day with his teacher to find out how
quickly he settled down when you went out of sight. You may do this during the
first week of school.
When you
come around for him after school hours, you may take him out and get him some
ice-cream; gently ask him questions in order to draw him out or make him open
up to you. This would help you determine the degree to which he enjoyed his
first day at school.
Hopefully,
with the points mentioned above, you now have a pretty good idea of what to do
when your baby is old enough to start school.
